Where?

"Real" decision number one = choose a venue! We're now booked to wed and party at The Portland Club in Portland, Maine. This place is REALLY cool. It's an old historic mansion, so we'll have lots of rooms at our disposal to mix things up a bit. Vader's favorite room is this:

I've made him swear up and down that he will not run off during the wedding to play cards and shoot pool with his friends, leaving me to dance dejectedly alone at our wedding. I'm personally jazzed for the photo opportunities!

Conveniently for us, a catering company (called the Black Tie Company, who owns the photo at right) runs the Portland Club event space, so we don't have to select a separate food/beverage vendor. They'll even make our cupcakes! And coordinate decorating! We're pretty excited.

Since the wedding STILL isn't for almost a year, we haven't done any tastings yet. Instead, we just sit around and drool over the menu options. Eager to (pretend to) do something productive, I made a list of all the appetizers I would eat. That narrowed the list to 18. Hopefully Vader turns out to be pickier than I am. Otherwise, hope the guests come hungry!

A slight food conundrum: we don't like seafood. Yep -- we're Mainer's who don't like lobster. Some of our family does, but two in my family are deathly allergic. All of this (and the price, let's not forget that...) deters us from offering seafood appetizer options, but in the back of my head is a voice saying "you're in MAINE."

If you were going to a wedding in Maine, and there was no seafood present, would you be sad?

  1. NO SEAFOOD??? I love seafood, but when allergies are involved you got to be careful! It's a tough decision, because you are in Maine after all! Maybe you can decide on a couple (even if you don't like them) just to have the option for people who do enjoy seafood-- just be sure to label them!!

  2. Congratulations on your engagement (however long it may be)! I LOVE Portland, Maine. Great choice for location. I don't know much about weddings except watching my friends plan them intensely; however, I do know it is YOUR day with your loved one. If you don't like seafood then don't have it! It's one of the only times all about you! If people complain you can say, "it's all about me today!".

  3. No on the lobster. It's Maine. If they are dying for lobster, they can get it at McDonalds, even. No need to follow the cliche (and an expensive one at that). Also, it's way too messy to eat at a wedding, and far too much work.

  4. I say get whatever YOU GUYS want, be it pigs-in-a-blanket or caviar and peaches. When you get your precious five minutes to eat, that food should rock your world. I'm talking mom-get-me-Lucky-Charms-cuz-it's-my-birthday good.

Or get pulled-pork. That stuff is delicious.

  7. I love seafood and I love Maine but it is your wedding. Choose what you want. Besides no need to risk someone accidentally getting a seafood app. My son has allergies so the caterer at his wedding has adjusted the recipes for all. No sense risking the groom getting sick. After all the wedding and joy of the day is what's important not the food, flowers, or brouhaha. Enjoy the planning.

  8. Um, will the hot guy in the photo also be at the wedding? (This is Natalie, btw)

  9. Not serving lobster at a Maine wedding will just show everyone what a trend-setting, non-tradition-bound, hip and happening young couple you must be! Seriously, add a bit of red to your black-and-white color scheme with some strategically placed TOY lobsters, and everyone will know they're in Maine. Ok, not seriously about the toy lobsters, but seriously, always remember, it's your wedding, and you should do what YOU want (except maybe it WOULD be best to avoid Darth Vader costumes of any type...).
